Residential Unvented Attics
An attic is simply the space between a pitched roof deck and the rest of the house. Traditionally, we place HVAC and ductwork (and often storage!) up there and insulate the floor of the attic. But according to ENERGY STAR, the average home loses about 20 percent of the air that moves through the HVAC system due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. The result is higher utility bills and difficulty keeping the house comfortable, no matter what the thermostat is set on.
To fix that problem, we use spray foam to create an unvented conditioned attic. By insulating the underside of the roof deck, we prevent unwanted air infiltration as well as airborne moisture from damaging the attic structure. The sealing turns the attic into conditioned space, which basically means we seal the home and bring the HVAC equipment and ductwork into the home.
So while your ductwork may still leak, that heating or cooling will stay within the home rather than leaking to the outside. With an unvented roof deck, you can conserve energy and reduce the moisture infiltration that is at the root of 90% of building failures.
The payoff:
- a more efficient HVAC system, resulting in lower utility bills
- improved indoor air quality
- prevention of airborne pollutants and mold
- consistent air temperature throughout home for increased comfort
